Set in an alternate post-war Japan divided between North and South, the story follows two boys, Hiroki and Takuya, and their quiet friend Sayuri. The boys dream of flying a handmade aircraft to a mysterious tower rising in the northern territory — a place they promise to visit together someday. When Sayuri suddenly disappears, their promise fades and their lives drift apart. Years later, strange scientific phenomena linked to the tower and Sayuri’s condition pull them back together. As reality and dreams begin to merge, Hiroki must confront his past promise and the emotional bond he never forgot. The film blends science fiction with melancholic romance, exploring memory, distance, and longing. With stunning skies and emotional storytelling, it shows Shinkai’s early signature style. It’s a quiet, reflective journey about love, loss, and promises made in youth.
